the long version

Pianist Dan Tepfer is simply one of the most unique musical minds we’ve ever encountered. Little-known media outlets like The Washington Post call him ”a remarkable musician,” while The New York Times raves about his “wide-open sensibility as tuned into Bach and Björk as to Monk and Wayne Shorter.” For his maiden voyage in the Crypt, he’ll perform a program based on his new album Inventions/Reinventions, where he plays and improvises upon Bach’s beloved Two Part Inventions, taking these timeless musical exercises in transcendent new directions.

The short version

Bach + Jazz + Crypt = A soul-filling fusion you won’t want to miss.

The Performers

The Music

One of his generation’s extraordinary talents, Dan Tepfer has earned an international reputation as a pianist-composer of wide-ranging ambition, individuality, and drive—one “who refuses to set himself limits” (France’s Télérama). The New York City-based Tepfer, born in 1982 in Paris to American parents, has recorded and performed around the world with some of the leading lights in jazz and classical music, from Lee Konitz to Renée Fleming, and released ten albums of his own in solo, duo and trio formats.

Phone Free Zone

PHONE-FREE ZONE - We all spend enough time in the thrall of our cellular overlords these days, so we've decided to make The Crypt Sessions a phone-free experience - yes, it means you won't be able to snap that Crypt-tastic selfie (though note that we'll share images with everyone the following day!), but it allows all of us to share the moment in a much more meaningful, purposeful way. Upon arrival at the venue, you'll receive a special Yondr pouch, into which we shall place our phones (keeping them with us throughout the evening). This cellular casket will be re-opened at the end of the event, and, worry not, our cellphones will once again be returned to our quivering, outstretched hands... We appreciate your understanding, and look forward to an evening of distraction-free transcendence!
