Announcing the return of its immersive Cabaret event Tiergarten, January 16 in collaboration with PROTOTYPE Festival
Hosted by Master of Ceremonies Kim David Smith and directed by DoC founder and Artistic Director Andrew Ousley, the program traces a path backwards in time, exploring historic moments of societal madness through music ranging from Handel and Verdi to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dean Martin to Max Richter, William Byrd to Brecht & Weill, with a panoply of performances that includes opera, classical, jazz, ballet, burlesque, and more
Audience members will enter the event through an alleyway behind St. Paul's Carroll Street in Brooklyn, into a church assembly hall that's been transformed into a 1920s Weimar Speakeasy, with food, drink, and pre-show performances included in ticket price
"Ousley’s combinations of Weimarkeit, classical music, modern dance, and contemporary song got at the heart and soul of the Weimar."

Death of Classical is proud to announce the return of its immersive, subversive, underground cabaret event Tiergarten, in a special one-night-only presentation in partnership with PROTOTYPE Festival. The performance will be directed by DoC founder and Artistic Director Andrew Ousley, and will be led by acclaimed cabaret singer Kim David Smith as Master of Ceremonies. Full program and performers will be announced at a later date.
The event takes its name from Berlin’s Tiergarten—“The Garden of Beasts”—a sprawling central park around which the Third Reich rose to power. The mixed program traces a path backward in time, exploring historical moments of societal madness via music ranging from Handel and Verdi to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dean Martin to Max Richter, William Byrd to Brecht & Weill, with a panoply of performances that includes opera, classical, jazz, ballet, burlesque, and more.
Audience members will enter the event through an alleyway behind St. Paul's Carroll Street in Brooklyn, into a church assembly hall that's been transformed into a 1920s Weimar Speakeasy, where they can enjoy pre-show performances along with wine by Bouchaine Vineyards and non-alcoholic libations by Curious Elixirs, as well as food options curated and crafted by Everyday Fay – all included in the ticket price.
Said Ousley: “In recent years, I’ve developed a fascination for the moments in human history when the collective weight of our individual decisions either tipped humanity into darkness, or turned us toward something greater – the gathering clouds that enshrouded the crumbling Weimar Republic, the fierce sense of independence that simultaneously gave birth to the United States and American slavery, the zealous piety of the mob that both murdered and immortalized Jesus. I believe that in these moments of fragile balance, our fate as a society is decided by the way that each of us responds to the situation that surrounds us – what we will and will not stand for, what we do and do not allow – and that is what I want to explore with Tiergarten.”
